Overflow is a dynamic book. First, it’s the story of the students of Realife, a youth ministry in the southwestern corner of the Show-Me State (that’s Missouri, y’all). In the fall of 2008, Realife’s youth pastor, Scotty Gibbons, challenged the students to give more to missions than ever before. Together, they launched a three month missions drive with the goal of giving $50,000! This was more than they had ever given in such a short amount of time, and the odds were stacked against them. Their church was in the middle of a major building campaign (and many of the students were already giving to that), the nation’s economy was going down the tubes, and the holidays were quickly approaching.
In spite of the odds, these students experienced overflow. In less than three months’ time, God worked through them to give more than $75,000 to missions! Initially, Realife had set out to buy a vehicle for one missionary through Speed the Light, a program that provides communication and transportation equipment to missionaries. By the time it was all said and done, Realife was able to meet several other needs for missionaries literally around the world.
Overflow isn’t just the story of one group, though. It’s the story of individuals just like you. Take these students, for example:
- Bekah, a junior higher, started quite a successful business making stuff out of duct tape.
- Matt, a college student, tried raising money for missions by giving plasma, but had a major mishap.
- Kaitlyn, a high school student, was afraid she might break one of Realife’s offering buckets dropping in 50 dollars worth of change.
Overflow is more than a book to read … it’s an experience you can live out every day! Whether you’re a student, a youth leader, or a youth pastor, God wants you to experience the joy of an overflowing life. He wants you to give out without running out. He wants to work so powerfully in and through you that the effects are felt around the world.

About Realife
Realife is the student ministry of James River Assembly, a dynamic church of more than 10,000 in southwest Missouri. The Realife Student Center is home to more than 1,000 students and 250 volunteer leaders.
In the fall of 2008, the students and youth leaders of Realife gave more than $75,000 to missions in less than three months. In 2009, the group has pledged to give $200,000 to missions. Through Overflow and the Overflow Experience, the group hopes to inspire others to give one million dollars to missions in 2009.

Scotty Gibbons has been the director of Realife Student Ministries at James River Assembly since 1993. When he started, Scotty could drive the entire youth group around in a van. Today, the Realife Student Center is home to more than 1,000 students and 250 volunteer leaders.
